The renovation benefits will help the patrons especially in the technology area. Increasing the number of computers that the students have access to will definitely help during the peak times of the day. Getting the 24 hour access to the library would be the biggest plus for me when doing research or homework. I really like the idea of sitting at the library's computer and clicking a button requesting help from the librarian. Not having to get up, go down three floors just to get instruction on how to solve a problem would be great. Another benefit is moving the Reference Desk to the front entrance instead of leaving it in the back of the library. This makes the Reference Desk seem more inviting to the patrons.

  1. WHat is the turn around time for library assistance and is it virtual assistance? And I agree that the Reference (Information) desks should be immediately visible.

  2. I am curious about the turn around time for reference assistance as well. I assume it is virtual. I wonder if 24 hour library service will be financially tenable in the long run. The study rooms that support personal laptops are a nice addition.

  3. It's interesting that a simple modification, such as moving the position of the reference desk, can potentially have a great impact on how well this valuable service is used. The added computer banks are a much-needed addition in a library that relies heavily on digital information.

  4. It does seem to be the trend that 24 hour access to the library and the reference librarian? I couldn’t tell from your comment if this had happened. I know I have been surprised to have reference questions that I have emailed answered within 24 hours but it has been the next day if I submit a question after library closing time. Is that how the service would work at this library? I have also seen the Reference Desk moved to the front in several libraries I have visited in recent years and it makes so much sense for the user you wonder how it ever got tucked away from there in the first place.

  5. Yes, also curious about the 24 hour reference service. If it is actually from a librarian that is astounding. I mean, it is incredibly useful and good on them if they have the cash to make it happen. I wonder how many legitimate questions they get at 2 in the am. Frankly, at that point it is probably going to be primarily drunk college students trying to find an answer to something really trivial and stupid. Then again, there were some last minute papers that really could have used some professional fact checking to save me the time to look stuff up on my own. Interesting though.

A better option would be to speak to the reference librarian by phone.
